And the winner is…

The world is full of unique places that have the distinction of being the ‘first,’ ‘best,’ ‘most,’ or some other superlative. Newcomers are intrigued by labels that distinguish their host country from other locations, and that often say something about the culture as well.

Let’s look at a few:

First country to grant women the right to voteNew Zealand (1893)
Kate Sheppard led women’s suffrage campaigns in 1891, ’92, and ’93, culminating in a new Electoral Act allowing women to vote in parliamentary elections. In 2020 New Zealand’s Parliament was 50 percent women – a record number of female members.

City with the most Michelin Star restaurants: Tokyo
Tokyo has more than 190 Michelin Starred restaurants, including three that have earned the Exceptional Cuisine distinction with three stars and 25 honored for Excellent Cooking with two stars.

Country with the highest number of sheep per capitaNew Zealand
Although the sheep population has been declining due to shifting land use, New Zealand still boasts 4.6 sheep per person. Other countries with more sheep than people include Australia, Iceland, Ireland, and Namibia.

First country to legalize same-sex marriage: The Netherlands
In 2021, The Netherlands became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage. Since that time, the country has become home to more than 20,000 gay couples. In 2025, 38 countries recognize same-sex marriage.

Home of the world’s most venomous spider Australia
The Sydney funnel web spider, found within a 160-km radius of the city, can be deadly within 15 minutes of contact with its venomous fangs. However, antivenom was developed in 1981 and no deaths have been recorded since that time.

Most expensive city for expatsHong Kong
Hong Kong topped Mercer’s cost of living index for 2024, as it did in 2023. Rounding out the top 10 are Singapore, Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, New York, London, Nassau, and Los Angeles. The two least expensive cities are in Nigeria: Lagos and Abuja.
