Is Feng Shui the Ultimate Form of Organizing?

The following article is a guest post by our friend, Sonya Weisshappel, Founder & CEO of Seriatim, Inc.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Feng Shui artists and learning from them. Through these experiences, I’ve come to appreciate the deeper, more spiritual elements of Feng Shui—elements that align perfectly with what I’ve been striving to accomplish as an organizer for the past thirty years. This led me to wonder: when everything is stripped down to its essential elements, could Feng Shui be the ultimate form of organizing?

From an inventory perspective, absolutely. Knowing what you own is always the first question I ask. Whether you’re practicing the spiritual rituals of Feng Shui—like ringing bells or performing formal blessings—or simply shifting the energy of a room, the process of vibrationally changing your space is powerful. The blessing, in particular, transforms the space in a way that goes beyond the superficial “put-together” aesthetic you might see in magazines like Architectural Digest. It’s not just about making things look organized or “cocktail-party ready.” It’s about understanding the tension in the space, the geography of where things are placed, and how each item should be positioned to support the entire organic environment.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s more important than ever to pause, sit still, and appreciate what you have. Your surroundings should empower you, not weigh you down. While we may not be certified Feng Shui masters at Seriatim, we are Chaos Whisperers—we know what works for a space, and what doesn’t. Our role is to help eliminate disorder and create an environment that supports who you are and what you want to accomplish.

A perfect example that comes to mind: let’s say you love to sew. Where are your quilting supplies? Where is your sewing machine? If it’s buried in the bottom of a closet, under bags of fabric, figuratively, this shows that you’re not making space—valuable space—for what you desire. There’s misalignment. Your space is not reflecting your passion, and that’s a disconnect.

But is the space itself preventing you from doing what you love without you realizing it? Subconsciously, your stuff and your space aren’t showing who you really are—and that can leave you feeling uneasy. When your space is at ease, there’s peace, balance, and alignment. Even if your space looks “disorganized”—such as spools of unwoven thread—it can still be organized in its own way. It’s about redefining what “organized” means. By taking items out of drawers and closets, acknowledging the disconnect, and then addressing it, we begin to heal the space. That’s where the real healing energy comes in.

Can you change your self-worth by changing your space? Can the clutter in your home represent shame, judgment, or distractions? In a world that’s becoming increasingly focused on self-care, it’s important to recognize that your space is a reflection of your well-being. Just as a child struggles to perform well in school when their home life is disruptive or angry, adults feel the effects of an out-of-balance home. If your home is chaotic, you’ll feel off, uncomfortable, and uncentered.

Feng Shui and Organizing are Therapy Sessions for the Mind and Body

Here’s a radical thought: what if the disorganization isn’t your fault? What if there’s a “weed in the garden”? What if the soil has never been tilled properly? What if the space you live in is holding onto negative energy or trauma from before you even arrived? In this way, your space may be unconsciously preventing you from moving forward. The pH level of the soil is like the vibrations of a blessing in the space. Just like a gardener carefully matches plants to the right soil, sunlight, and environment, you too can create a space that aligns with who you are and the energy you want to cultivate.

For me, Feng Shui isn’t about grandiose or erudite practices—it’s as simple as gardening or therapy for the mind. You start with one small thing, and then you go one step at a time. Don’t know where to begin? Let’s figure out that next step together. Whether it’s a minor shift or a complete transformation, your space has the potential to support your life in profound ways.
